Domestic Violence HW1

Domestic violence happens all the time. In a 2011 domestic violence fatality date done by the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence, found that 61 died in Washington state by domestic violence.

My state is Washington. I found an article in the Seattle Times, of a young woman, Hortencia Salas, telling her story of the domestic violence brought upon her by her then boyfriend, Carlos Galvin-Diaz who had had a pass with domestic violence.  Salsa recalls the story of the time when she came home from work tired and pregnant with soon to be son Max. When she came home Galvin-Diaz, drunk had started to have an argument with Salsa which eventually escalated into Galvin-Daiz pushing Salsa down the stairs and stabbing her with a utility knife. Since then Galvin-Diaz was sentences to 20 years in prison. Salsa had turn into a dark place in her life which eventually led her to Wellspring’s child-care program for homeless children. He son Max was born healthy thrived in the Wellspring’s child-care program and him and his mother are doing very well thanks to the support and help from family and Wellsprings.

I found this youtube video very interesting to: Brief description—Senator Murray addresses the President on the importance on a bill for women in domestic violence. The stories I found were inspirational and showed the important provision for domestic violence victims.

Laws in the state of Washington on Domestic Violence

The legal definition of domestic violence is “ when one or more of the following things occur between “family or household members”---physical harm, bodily injury, assault, sexual assault, stalking, making you feel immediate physical harm, bodily injury or assault.” It is a felony, like no contact violation involving an assault or a third violation of a no contact order. It protects the person involved in the crime( the victim and the children of the victim if they have any).

Programs:
There are many programs out there to help domestic violence victims. I found for my state that there are programs for the victim, the victim’s family, if the victim has children, and support groups for the victim.  There are different types of programs as well some. Here are a few web links I found for programs in assisting domestic violence victims.

In the media:
There are many different media aspects towards domestic violence. I found a site with a documentary on domestic violence which was produced by a Seattle man. The documentary is called  Shout. The Story of Domestic Violence. which looks at the issues of domestic violence in the state of Washington. In addition, I found an advertisement on domestic violence and the reality of it, performed by Keira Knightley.
These are the websites to both:

If you are a book lover like me, here are some books from Barnes and Noble on domestic violence:
